Scagliola Stone™

Scagliola is a technique developed by impoverished Italian monks in the 17th Century. Searching for a way to restore their monastery, they discovered that an aggregate of natural stone chips (Scaglia in Italian), bonding agents and pigments could be combined to form a material indistinguishable from the original stone.

Italian artisans decorated churches and luxurious residences with this time-honored technique. Scagliola (pronounced sca-lee-oh-la) was for many centuries the highest form of ornamental stone art.

Scagliola is made from natural stone chips, marble dust, mineral pigments and bonding agents. Once the medium is mixed it is carefully layered by hand into a form. The stone piece is then removed from the form and carefully polished by hand. Multiple polishing using finer and finer grades of stone and water produce a denser and smoother surface. This process allows for a silky smooth surface and texture of amazing clarity.

The precision and intricate detail possible with this technique is truly astonishing. Scagliola is a noble stone product that lends a sense of heritage to each and every design application we offer, from mantelpieces to range hoods, as well as our many architectural accents. Our Scagliola Stone™ is available in a variety of colors and finishes shown here.
